to be the words of the distinguished vice president of the united states, mr. joe biden. no, don't boo. he's the best thing we got going, guys. >> and how's this for trail mix? mitt romney got more than he bargained for when he posed at chipotle after ordering a burrito bowl in a photo op that's an internet sensation. good day, andrea mitchell live in denver at the site of tonight's presidential debate, the first time in five years that barack obama and mitt romney are going to be face-to-face in what the local newspaper is headlining as the duel in denver. joining me now for our daily fix, chris cizilla, msnbc contributor and managing editor of post politics.com. first of all, this, the big face-off, let's talk about the state of the race. we have new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll numbers showing a slight tightening in the race. fou looks as though mitt romney is in the national polls slightly narrowing the gap. other problems within those numbers, problems for romney. >> yeah. i mean first of all let me say i love duel in denver. i'm a big fan of that one. i think andrea, look, las

of debate can we expect there between joe biden and paul ryan? >> fii think if you ask a lot o republican folks, they're looking forward to this more so than presidential debate. they think they have a rock star in paul ryan. he'll have the opportunity to be fully unleashed in that 90-minute session with joe biden. one of the things he said to chris wallace today is he's not a line guy. he's not going to try to razzle-dazzle you with some line that sounds like it's been coined and in his back pocket for a month and a half. he's going to talk about the policies he and mitt romney want to put into play. he knows that vice president biden is going to come after him on his medicare and budget. >> how's he going to respond? >> they're ready. they want to be able to make the case to the american people that the real threat to medicare and its future is the president's affordable health care act, which they lovingly refer to as obamacare, and the fact that the president's plan extracts $716 million away to pay for that. what paul ryan isn't telling his supporters is that his budget proposal also

'm concerned about the middle class. and middle class isn't doing very well. joe biden let it slip out the other day, they've been buried, buried under debt, buried out of work, buried with high gas prices, shovel ready senator? if you listen closely to the senator, you'll realize if you re-elect him, we're going to get more of the same, more taxes on the middle class and more peril for our children's future. america is in a crisis. if you can believe that we can do better as i do, that we can improve the lives for all of our citizens, put them back to work, and keep this american dream alive and well for our children, our grandchildren, you'll choose me. >> thank you. >> i wanted to thank everyone. look the middle class is under attack and that's why i have been fighting back. i led the charge to crack down on wall street's abusive practices. a championed targeted tax relief to the middle clafments those things that can help them be able to raise their families. my opponent votes for tax breaks for millionaires but against tax breaks for middle class. i help stop insurance from denyin

government in our lives. >> we have taken the debates and broken into topic areas. joe biden is out campaigning in iowa. he talked about what he thought the president did last night. >> i thought the president did well. you never know what game that governor romney will come out with. the centerpiece of the economic policies so far has been tax cuts. last night we found out that he does not -- i guess the outdoors that to china -- outsourced that to china. i don't know. i think as time goes on, it will become pretty clear that the governor romney has changed a number of his positions are does not remember his positions. at the end of the day, we have bought two debates coming up for the president, and i feel real good about it. -- we have two the dates coming up for the president, and i feel real good about it. it is easy to say i would have done this or said that, but remember he was in front of many people. all debates are tough. i am looking forward to it. the thing with congressman ryan is that he has been straightforward up until now. there are significant changes he wants to m

for debate preparations. their debate is 11 days away, but vice president joe biden and romney running mate paul ryan are already mixing it up at a campaign stop in florida. the vice president said romney's economic plan would hit seniors with more taxes on their social security benefits. ryan fired back at a rally in ohio, accusing biden trying to scare people for political gain. >> joe biden himself voted to raise taxes on social security benefits and as a senator, president obama voted to keep those tax increases in place three times. i want to be very clear about this. mitt romney and i will never waiver in our commitment to our seniors. our plans actually saved these programs. >> biden and ryan's one and only debate is next thursday in kentucky. >>> and former republican presidential candidate rick santorum says mitt romney and republicans should support todd akin. he says an akin win is essential for the republican party to win control of the senate. akin is challenging claire mccaskill. he has been criticized after using the term "legitimate rape." our abundant natural gas is already

report and with us from waution, jared bernstein, former economist for joe biden. it's good to have you here. jared, i start with you. as we look at these numbers, is this a true game changer for the president? >> it certainly helps. i mean, this month's decline in the unemployment rate that you have been talking about from 8.1% down to 7.8%, that's the good kind of decline in unemployment because it came from a lot more people getting jobs. if you recall back last month, i was sitting in this chair telling you that the decline in unemployment from 8.3% to 8.1% was illusory. it tells you, as i said, more people came into the job market and got jobs. but it also tells you that the monthly surveys are volatile. however, i think there's other evidence in this report, perhaps we can get into it, that shows some momentum moving in the right direction. the pace of employment growth appears to be accelerating in the payroll survey as well. >> ron, i want to ask you about jack welch's tweet about the books basically being cooked. you know, he's a ge pioneer. we know him well around 30 rock. >>

biden and paul ryan's image. ryan generally, generally has a better image than paul ryan. if joe biden is the answer i don't know what -- want to know what the question is. look, senior citizens, republicans -- the nice thing is we have had decades of dealing with democratic demagoguery on seniors issues whether it be social security or medicare or both. so look we are well aware -- the first stage in a democratic campaign plan is minority turnout plan. the first page and the republicans is, how do we make sure we don't get heard among senior citizens so this is something our campaigns are very aware of. we have messages that we have tested in response. yes it is effective. you test a democratic attack versus a republican response attack and basically it plays to a tie so i don't think it's going to be the game-changer for the house that the democrats you know, think that it is. the one thing to keep an eye on actually more than cedar citizens on this issue are near seniors, those 55 to 64 years old. seniors are getting medicare and getting social security. they know that the rug is no

joe biden paul ryan and the republican party in general. it is well known romney's favorability numbers are lower than the president's many believe romney, mega-rich businessman, who once tied the family dog to the roof of his car, doesn't seem able to connect with a lot of ordinary voters out will but less popular than george w. bush, that's cold. for start i, romney and his campaign have done everything in their power to make americans forget about george w. bush in his eight years as president. romney avoids mentioning the form president's name. bush was nowhere to be seen at the republican convention in tampa. that's because for a lot of americans, bush's presidency brings back bad memories of the war in iraq, afghanistan, and the dismal response to the federal government to hurricane katrina, and the conditions that allowed the financial crisis of 2008 to happen, on and on. it is a long list. a few months ago, a cnn poll found bush is the least popular living ex-president. somehow he still gets better favorable ratings than the republican that wants to be our next president
